Watching Ingmar Bergman’s films, I wonder how he had time to figure all the details and make them work. Everything seems to have meaning. The more you look, the more you see. He created so many films, and did it so quickly. (The Seventh Seal was made in 35 days.) Didn’t he make mistakes? Was everything intentional? Or do we, trusting him, put the meaning in ourselves?
Here’s my Ingmar Bergman rule: you have to watch them twice.
